Book Review - First Sight by Laura Donohue

First Sight - Laura Donohue

My Review

Maddy Smith has a good life, two besties, a great apartment and writes for a Washington, DC magazine! Life is great with parties and friends, until one night while out she sets eyes on a handsome stranger, but she never has a chance to talk to him until he shows up at her office the very next workday. For Travis, the new guy in town, even though he and Maddy hit it off immediately, nothing seems to be moving along except a great friendship, then there is a misunderstanding and that may mean the end of the relationship that has never begun.  This was a sweet story where eyes lock across a crowded room and there is love at “first sight”. Sounds cliché, it’s not and I’m living proof of that! It was fun to read and reminisce along with the story of Maddy and Travis, and even though they both frustrated me at different points in the story I had no choice but to keep rooting for them both.  Cute, warm fuzzy story that will leave you with a smile, whether you want to believe in love at “first sight” or not!

Book Review – A Thirty-Something Girl by Lisa M. Gott

A Thirty-Something Girl - Lisa M. Gott

My Review

First of all, let me say this. The absolute accuracy with which the author Lisa M. Gott portrayed depression in this book was spot on. Whether or not the situation is of your own making, or not, the emotions for the most part remain the same. After 30 year old Hope finds her life in a shambles, after a pregnancy loss, financial struggles and a divorce, she finds herself caught up in a never-ending vortex of depression. With the help of friends, she is given a chance to pull herself together and meets Sam, who understands what Hope is going through. Throughout this book Lisa M. Gott gives us the insight into an illness which is becoming more and more common in a world where the pressures to succeed in everything we put our hands to is high. The back of the book says is all, ” happiness is actually a very simple concept: it is a choice. A choice we must remember to make each and every day.”

About the Author

Lisa M. Gott is a contemporary literary fiction author. Her stories tell of the human spirit – sometimes sad, sometimes not – most can relate to them on some level or another. When she’s not feverishly weaving words, you can find her enjoying nature, spending time with her incredible husband, and sometimes sipping a latte. Okay, maybe more than sometimes.

Maggie Piper is exactly one year away from her 40th birthday and she feels no different from when she was 29. She’s in a great relationship which is moving in the direction it should be, but is she settling? or is this what she really wants? What if there is something better out there? When a conversation goes where she did not expect, she finds herself single again and she is trying to figure out what she wants before it’s too late!  So many women go through this same plight at some time in their life, wondering if we’re settling, we see the days and years pass so quickly wondering if we will find the one and when we feel time is running out? Sometimes we marry the next thing that comes along and realize years later that we’ve made a mess of everything and other lives are affected and then all hell breaks loose, but I digress… All this to say, this was a great emotional story, with some honest to goodness insight and wisdom! Don’t let other people make you feel bad for wanting to be happy with the right person!

Book Review – Summer Secrets by Jane Green

Summer Secrets - Jane Green

Cat Coombs has a great job as a journalist that she absolutely loves! But with that life comes a “side effect” that she can’t seem to control, and after a family secret is revealed she falls apart even more than before, but Cat is in denial. The visit to America was supposed to change everything, but during that visit Cat does the unthinkable and ruins the life she’s long dreamed of. As time passes and responsibilities grow, the monster seems to haunt her steps.

What we do in the past can haunt us for a long time, whether the action is accidental or deliberate, the consequence with always be there. This is one of those stories. This story was about love, vengenance and forgiveness and putting our past to rest, not letting is hold us back, but letting it grow us up!

Book Review - The One & Only by Emily Giffin

The One and Only - Emily Giffin

I received a copy of The One & Only by Emily Giffin in exchange for an honest review.

Shea Rigsby is an American football fanatic and one of the hugest supports of Walker, Texas’ high school football team.  After the death of a close family friend Shea starts to re-assess different areas of her life because she realizes the truth “life is short”.  She then embarks on some life changes in her career and begins her quest to find love.  She thinks the changes are for the better, but as time goes on, she wonders if everyone and everything is as it seems.  I really enjoyed this book, a lot!  Shea’s whole life is consumed by American football, a little on the extreme side if you ask me – but you didn’t, did you?  She practically worships the high school coach and some of the guys who went professional she’s known since high school.  I liked Shea’s character, although I have to question some of her choices.  This book is about family, friends, loyalty and love and there were many twists that made it interesting with a surprising ending.

Cure for the Common Breakup

Cure for the Common Breakup - Beth Kendrick I received a copy of Cure for the Common Breakup by Beth Kendrick in exchange for an honest review.

Summer Benson heart is broken so she recalls an article she read on this place called Black Dog Bay and decides that’s what she needs to get over her heartbreak. Everything is perfect here and she meets some kindred spirits who get what she’s going through and they help each other heal. I totally loved this book! It was funny, light and delightful! I think we all wish there was such a place – this book was so uplifting, even when things didn’t go right. Dutch seemed dreamy and not someone a girl would walk out on if they had any common sense. Can’t see anyone not loving this book!

Review - When Girlfriends Take Chances by Savannah Page

When Girlfriends Take Chances - Savannah Page

I received a copy of When Girlfriends Take Chances by Savannah Page in exchange for an honest review.

The girls again! Emily has been in town for quite some time, around a year, and she is starting to feel the itch for adventure again.  So much has happened with all the other girls and she’s been there for them.  They realize that they have all found love except her.  So as a salve for Emily’s need for adventure they devise a plan to find her some “lurve”.  Each one of the girls has to find someone they think will be a perfect match for Emily, so she could find her happy ever after.  I liked the story and it held true to the personality of the girls, however, this is the only time I did not like Emily at all, she is a shallow one, probably one of the most shallow of all the girls, and I thought Jackie held that crown for so long.  Great story with a real life situation, with the world we live in now, it’s more likely to happen than not.  Another great book in the series.

Book Review – Chocolate Dreams at the Gingerbread Cafe by Rebecca Raisin

Chocolate Dreams at the Gingerbread Cafe - Rebecca Raisin

Lily, the owner of The Gingerbread Café, and her friend CeeCee are preparing for the first ever Chocolate Festival in Ashford, Connecticut and the whole town in buzzing with excitement!  Things are just going the greatest it’s ever been with Damon and with his absolutely charming daughter Charlie, Easter is going to be a dream.  Then Lily’s ex Joel rides into town with all the usual drama that he brings.  This was a really cute read and it was surprisingly short.  For those looking for a quick read this is it with a really sweet ending – with a strong message about what’s important in life and love and friendship.

The Last Time I Saw You

The Last Time I Saw You - Eleanor Moran Olivia’s best friend Sally, from college has died in a car crash and she is devastated. Death is so final and Olivia is having a very difficult time trying to grieve since the relationship did not end well. Sally’s personality was always erratic and it seemed that Olivia was always trying to compete for Sally’s affections. Attending the funeral was a very eye opening experience when Olivia learns that Sally named her only daughter after Olivia, since they were no longer close and Sally’s husband seemed to be someone that Sally would not likely be attracted to – had her friend changed that much since they parted ways? This book was a mystery from the get-go. It was easy to see how Olivia got caught up in Sally’s manipulative personality and so did everyone else. Sally’s selfishness was epic, she always seemed to never take responsibility for her actions and her husband seemed to caught up in the same web of confusion that Olivia was. When Olivia finds some information regarding Sally just prior to her death, she is once again thrown for a loop and the growing friendship with Olivia and Sally’s husband complicates everything even more. This book was happy in a sad way, and that makes no sense, people are torn in loyalty to Sally because of who she was, yet they know she was not the most honest person. This story shows how the people we meet in life can sometimes change the way we view ourselves and the world without us knowing it or not.

If You Only Knew

If You Only Knew - Zanna Mackenzie received a copy of If You Only Knew by Zanna MacKenzie in exchange for an honest review.

Faith has sworn off men since her last relationship ended badly and she focuses totally on running her coffee shop. Then one day, in walks Zane and all her convictions fly out the window. Everything is going well and then his business partner arrives and to the horror of horrors, Zane’s business partner turns out to be Faith’s ex, Matt, who she has tried so hard to forget.

What a mess this was, I did like Faith and to be honest I could totally relate to her distrust where men were concerned, and Zane’s erratic behavior did not make anything easier. Added to all this stress, Matt being back in town and being the confusing mess that he was, she did quite well keeping her head screwed on the right way. Everyone seemed to have a secret and did not even realize that they were their own worst enemy. Everything could have been so much simpler!

Kept me guessing to the end – who knew?!

Dandy Day

Dandy Day - Annie Wood I received a copy of Dandy Day by Annie Wood in exchange for an honest review.

Dandy Day – yes that is her real name – is 35 years old and as neurotic as anyone could ever be. She decides to find out what it is about her that makes none of her relationship work out for longer than three months and goes about interviewing her exes to find out where she went wrong.

This was a very funny, short story, I could not help but like Dandy, even when she did not exactly have a “Dandy Day”… Her obsession with analyzing her emotions were a hoot, and even though she was overly analytical, it make the story very funny.

Loved it!
Synchronized Breathing - Tara Ellison received a copy of Synchronized Breathing by Tara Ellison in exchange for an honest review.

After a failed marriage, Scarlett decides to move in with her mom at the age of thirty-five, which is not “old” at all, unless you have a mom like CeCe. Scarlett is trying to navigate her way back into the real world and her mom’s choices may not be the best ones for her, since it has not really worked for her mom so far ….

I can’t help but feel some, sad to say, pity for Scarlett having to deal with her mom, who doesn’t seem to be operating with all her pistons, shall we say?? Scarlett, has to however, in spite of that, find a way to make a life for her and her young son, Oliver. This story is so funny and more of us, than we would like to admit, could relate to Scarlett’s story of finding the happiness they hope that’s out there waiting for them, in spite of the past they are trying to forget.

It was a great read for sure!

Everybody's Got a Story (Toronto Series) (Volume 12)

Everybody's Got a Story - Heather Wardell I received a copy of Everybody’s Got a Story by Heather Wardell in exchange for an honest review.

Alexa is still struggling to move on after the assault of her ex-boyfriend Christophe, and who can blame her – no one should ever have to deal with that. His assault affects Alexa in every facet of her life, both work and personal.

This was such a heart-breaking story and I could not help but feel absolutely saddened for Alexa and what she was dealing with, emotionally, mentally and physically. This book brought the long lasting effects on victims of assault to the forefront and the reality of the lasting feeling of being a victim can in fact for some, last for a lifetime. This book is a great read, but not a light one.

Christmas Carol

Christmas Carol - Michele Gorman I received a copy of Christmas Carol in exchange for an honest review.

Carol is attending her sister Marley’s wedding in rural Scotland and ends up having to spend time with three of her ex-boyfriends who have also been invited to her sister’s special day.

This book was so funny, I absolutely loved Carol’s inner dialogue and her quirky family. Her grandmother was a riot and her sister Marley and was one of my favorites with her sentimentality. I could understand Carol's self searching, doubt and sadness, but based on her past experiences I could totally see how Carol ended up with her mindset.

Michele Gorman brought Carol to life and I would recommend this to anyone who could do with some laughs.
